TREES FOR CHRISTMAS

Do you know why we put up trees during Christmas? Well, it evolves from many early traditions.

When the winter solstice arrived, the Egyptians brought green palm leaves into their homes to symbolise life’s triumph over death. The Romans celebrated the solstice with a fest in honour of Saturnus, the god of agriculture called Saturnalia and they would decorate their houses with green branches and candles, and exchange gifts.

Later, during the Middle Ages, both Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees just outside their doors or inside the house, as a way to show their hope in the arrival of spring.  From here this tradition spread to the rest of Europe and on to America, slowing converting into the Christmas tree we now know.

For this Sunday Doodle Party, the theme that Les Antònies have chosen is the Christmas tree. To do mine, I have used watercolours and both a red and a gold marker.

And with them, a quote together with my best wishes for a Happy Christmas!!

“Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas ... perhaps … means a little bit more!
