A JAPANESE BREEZE

Lately, I have been rather “gone”, mainly because I’ve had two lovely weeks holiday and once back caught a rotten cold which has now turned into an annoying cough (I think my body is telling me that it doesn't like being back!!), but I didn't want to leave it any longer and show you the very first pair of shoes I did, to “practice” doing decoupage onto canvas.

I have always been fascinated in Japanese art and as I’m usually my own “ginny pig”, I decided to do them with a Japanese look.

I started out by painting a dark yellow background with acrylic paint mixed together with a few drops of fabric medium. Then I painted some white and purple mountains (I just had to have something purple). Once dry, I then did decoupage with flowers, some japanese text on the sides and two geishas on the toes. I added some white polka dots to break up the yellow.

When they where completely dry, I gave them two coats of flexible matte varnish to protected them and also keep them flexible for walking. The varnish protects the decoupage and I can say that I have washed them (by hand), using an old tooth brush and soap. I even dunged them into water a few times as I had got mud on them (this happened because I tried not to jump into a puddle and ended up jumping into the mug!!). Happily, they survived the washing and I can say, that I wear them quite a lot and they still are looking good.
